The Upper Cathedral Rock Trail will be closed for construction and maintenance beginning February 28 through April 13, 2024.  The upper trail leads to the saddle of Cathedral Rock.  Due to this construction, you won’t be able to access it. The Lower Trail is still open.

For the most current information visit the Red Rock Ranger District.  The Forest Service website states “This Order shall be in effect from February 28, 2024, through April 13, 2024, on Wednesdays through Saturdays, 8:00am to 4:30pm, unless rescinded”. Read the Forest Service press release here.

As a reminder, if you wish to hike in this area from the parking area, you will need to use the Sedona Shuttle during operating hours. Last year the Forest Service did maintenance on this trail and reopened the trail earlier than expected.  Keep checking the Red Rock Ranger District for updates on the reopening of the trail.

Just for fun, read the news release from last year below.  Workers were unable to complete the maintenance in 2023 due to poor weather.  It is an ongoing process!

SEDONA, Ariz., Jan. 27, 2023 — The upper portion of Cathedral Rock Trail, located on the Red Rock Ranger District (RRRD), will close for construction February 1 through roughly March 31, 2023.

The area will close to the public while the Red Rock Trail Crew reconstructs rock walls and installs check steps on the trail.

The trail will be closing due to the inability to safely reroute hikers around the area. Hazards include the possibility of large rolling rocks and other falling debris during construction.

Throughout the project, Cathedral Rock Trail will be closed from the Templeton Trail junction to the upper terminus. The area located 200 feet in any direction of the trail will be closed as well.

The lower 0.2 miles of the trail – the Cathedral Rock trailhead to the Templeton Trail junction – will remain open to the public during this project.

Visitors must use the free Sedona Shuttle to access the trailhead during shuttle operation hours. The Sedona Shuttle schedule is available at sedonashuttle.com/routes/route-15.

During Cathedral Rock trail construction, RRRD visitors are encouraged to seek alternate trail options on the Coconino National Forest website at fs.usda.gov/recmain/coconino/recreation.
